Welcome to the second TESSA Francophone newsletter.

2011 has been an eventful year for TESSA :

• TESSA was very honoured and immensely proud to receive one of the Wise prizes in Doha, Qatar (see Ms Sally Pritchard’s article in TESSA Newsletter, December 2011). 
• The projects detailed in the January 2011 Francophone newsletter are well underway and we are beginning to assemble a collection of case studies and strategies for implementing more sustainable ideas TESSA in the classroom.         

The activities for TESSA in Francophone countries have developed in two key areas:

•      In Togo, colleagues from the Teacher Training Directorate (Direction des Formations) in Lomé finished adapting the TESSA resources to the Togo needs and context. They have started to reflect on strategies to adopt to ensure that their work has an influence on the quality of education. Mrs Cra-Amivi Komlan reports on this work in TESSA in Togo: Progress since the September 2010 workshop. 
• The second thrust of our work focused on developing closer relationships with other Francophone initiatives and REL, namely the French Initiative for teachers of French by distance learning (IFADEM) and the Association for the Promotion of @frican Open Educational Resources (Apréli@) with the aim to share some of our activities and strategies to contribute to the improvement of the quality of education in Sub-Saharan Africa in a concerted rather than piecemeal manner. Ms Sally Pritchard’s article gives an account of the activities that took place in October 2011 during a joint workshop between IFADEM and TESSA and Geneviève Puiségur-Pouchin reports on the progress of Apréli@ e-twinnings, and Mr. Kossi Agbogan and classroom teachers involved in the trialling of the e-twinnings speak of their experience in Apreli@ in Togo.

TESSA wins one of the Wise Prizes in Doha

The TESSA team is delighted to announce that TESSA was awarded one of six prizes by the World Innovation Summit for Education. The panel considered hundreds of entries and selected TESSA for its creative approach and its evidence of impact. A WISE spokesperson said :

“The 2011 winners were selected for their innovative approaches and positive impact upon societies and education, within the perennial theme of Transforming Education : Investment, Innovation and Inclusion.”

Commenting on the winning projects, H. E.Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al-Thani, Chairman of WISE said: “Innovation is cru- cial for continuing to improve both access to and quality of education. The Awards aim to showcase inspiring projects and give them the exposure they deserve. The 2011 WISE winners have often had to overcome pre-conceived ideas and find creative solutions to bread down barriers to innovation in education.” 

The Awards were presented a Gala Dinner in Qatar on November 2nd. TESSA Director Freda Wolfenden commented:

“I was extremely privileged to collect the award in person from Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned at the WISE event; a vibrant, stimulating sharing of practices with over 1000 participants from across the world.”

In accepting the award, the TESSA team at the Open University would like to pay tribute to our international partners based across sub-Saharan Africa, who have been integral to the success of TESSA; as institutions and individuals they have committed time, energy and creativity to incorporating the TESSA approach into teacher education programmes, which has been the crucial element of success.
